The word modern simply means, “relating to the present.” You are likely to find features in modern homes that relate to the past, such as borrowing design elements and using them in fresh ways—or, you may find modern homes that do their own thing without trying to replicate past styles.

The beauty of this exercise is that there are very few design “rules” when it comes to a modern home. But the following will give you a good start.

Simplicity in Design

Clean lines, simple designs free from excess embellishment, and minimalism—these three driving forces can determine the style of pavers you choose. If you look at the difference between a classic brick patio and a minimalist patio that uses large-format pavers, you can see how one is charming and textured, while the other is simple and clean.

Large format pavers minimize the visual clutter of joints, allowing the colors and textures of the pavers to take the stage. They may complement or contrast the colors and textures of the home, but one thing is for certain: they will have their own presence.

For the simplest and cleanest look, opt for large format pavers that feature subtle patterns. This puts the emphasis on texture and color. Choosing a joint compound in the same color as the pavers will help create the illusion of a continuous space.

Geometric Designs

Laying patterns for modern homes can vary. Many outdoor spaces have mixed paver sizes and laying patterns to define spaces. For example you could lay one set of pavers perpendicular to the home and then, in the transitional area between activity zones, add a decorative border to define the space and lay different pavers in a different pattern, perhaps at a 30- or 45 degree angle.

Achieve a relaxed look by choosing pavers that can be laid in an easygoing ashlar pattern. Or, for a more formal effect, choose large-format square patterns arranged corner-to-corner, or oversized plank-like pavers laid in a classic running bond. These visually pleasing patterns are simultaneously fresh and timeless.

Colors, Textures, and Finishes

With less ornamentation used in modern design, colors, textures, and finishes take center stage. Colors of the main patio are typically neutrals (to avoid the quickly dated look that dramatic or trendy colors can impart). Visual interest can be achieved through mixing textures and finishes and by adding simple decorative accents and borders.

Contrast in Paver Choices

Modern design often plays with contrasts, such as between industrial and natural. Blending the two can be achieved by choosing pavers that don’t mimic natural materials but are unabashedly man-made and modern. Other pavers mimic the look of wood planks, which is another fun contrast to play alongside real wood features such as a raised teak platform or privacy fence.

Lack of Ornamentation

In many cases, you probably want to avoid too much ornamentation in your designs. Instead of multi-colored borders and decorative inlays, experiment with same-color borders (changing up the laying pattern) or subtle borders that are just a few shades lighter or darker.
