1. Just the Right Water Feature

You can’t create that feel of serenity at the beach without water. Today’s water feature options—from fountains to ponds—can be customized, including their size, shape, depth, and finishing touches, so that you can create the desired look and feel.

Consider adding to the fun with a waterfall in an existing pool. Also give your clients something to think about as they look over paver choices for their pool deck that could be sandy colored like the beach yet not as hot as beach sand. Laying pavers in a random fashion such as an ashlar pattern will contribute to the relaxed vibe.

If your clients have the space, you can suggest an island or a peninsula for a new pool. This feature can be topped with rounded pebbles that make for a great beach look without the hassle of bringing sand into the pool.

2. Comfortable Shade

Staying cool is key to a happy day outdoors. While it’s nice to warm up in the sun after a swim, at some point people will probably want to move into the shade. A pergola can be the perfect solution. This open-sided structure also features an open roof that blocks the sun but allows air to circulate freely for a comfortably cool experience. You can customize a pergola (and add privacy) with outdoor curtains or a vine-covered trellis. Add hooks that can hold a colorful hammock, and your clients get to enjoy a true retreat in the backyard!

3. A Grill with a Bar

An outdoor grill station with an attached bar adds to the relaxing beach vibe. This L-shaped structure puts all the cooking and food prep on one peninsula, and an open bar with seating on the other. Cover this “tiki bar” with a pergola, add some climbing vines like bougainvillea and beach-themed decor like surfboards, tiki torches, and driftwood. The finishing touch that’s an instant hit with everyone? A wood-fired pizza oven!

4. A Warming Fire Pit

Bonfires on the beach never go out of style. A fire pit can be made using natural stone such as river rock for an authentic appearance. You can also create a beautiful fire pit using concrete blocks, which will give people a place to sit or rest their feet close to the fire on chilly days. You may want to recommend gas- or propane-fueled fire pits around the pool area, for safety and convenience.

5. Beach-themed Vegetation

Any plants you install can contribute to the beach vibe. Suggest broad-leafed plants, tall ornamental grasses, brightly colored flowers and succulents; and instead of bark mulch, suggest natural stone mulch in a light, sandy color.

6. Boulders

Well-placed boulders contribute to a relaxed backyard theme. Natural boulder-lined waterfalls that spill into a pond also give landscape professionals the constant sound of moving water, not unlike the sound of waves hitting the beach.
