A cozy fire in the backyard can be one of the most enticing activities that bring friends and family together. A fire pit is a gorgeous landscape feature by itself, but it needs to have some unity with the surrounding landscape. Using pavers to complement your fire pit will help tie all aspects of the home together. Circular Borders

A circular design can maximize the space and give everyone equal access to the warmth of the fire. You can mimic this design with circular paver arrangements. 

There are a few options with this approach: 

First, you could place a decorative border immediately around the fire pit that contrasts the color of the masonry used in the fire pit and even the patio to define the space and draw the eye. This border could be as small as a few inches, up to about a foot beyond the fire pit.

Another option is to expand this circle to encompass the entire fire pit area—in effect, creating an “area rug” of pavers. You can be as bold or as subtle with this as you’d like. For example, you could install contrasting pavers such as brick for this purpose (the look of brick is a wonderful material to use for circular applications because of its shape). Or you could use the same pavers as the rest of the patio, and lay them in a circular pattern for a more subtle appearance. This approach works well if the pavers you use on the patio are a uniform shape and size.  

Colors and Textures

There are two main color categories when it comes to selecting stone materials: warm earthy tones and cool gray tones. The masonry already present in the space could be the basis for your fire pit color choices. 

But rules are sometimes made to be broken. 

Some fire pits are intended to be more of a stand-alone feature—a focal point more—than an integrated feature. If that’s the case, you may want to avoid the transitional area altogether and just bring the main field of the patio pavers right up to the fire pit. This is a bold look that will bring attention to your fire pit.

Using texture to draw attention to the fire pit is another technique. If you want the look to be more integrated, use masonry of a similar texture to the patio—and if the fire pit is meant to be a dramatic focal point, you could choose a different texture entirely.

What About Steel or Concrete Bowl Fire Pits?

If your fire pit isn’t masonry, you can still make a wonderful design statement with your patio pavers in the fire pit area.

You can follow the same design cues as if it were a masonry block fire pit—using borders, patio paver “area rugs” or a simpler no-transition area. 

Since bowl-style fire pits are often perfectly smooth, you can play around with textures to create a dynamic space. For example, rough-textured patio pavers, such as those that mimic natural flagstone or bluestone, could be an interesting juxtaposition to the smoothness of a bowl-style fire pit. Or, to keep the area feeling fresh and modern, you could stick with smooth-textured pavers for a sleek look.
